FITNESS-FRIENDLY ALCOHOLIC DRINKS

Fitness-Friendly Alcoholic Drinks

Alcohol and fitness generally don’t go hand in hand. There is a reason why they call it a beer belly. Too much of the stuff hides your abs and ruins your gains. I have tried to give it up altogether, to no avail. But when I am shredding, I do cut down significantly. However, when the weekend rolls around, I can’t resist a couple of drinks with my friends after work.

Before you reach for the beer, there are alcoholic drinks that can still maintain your fitness plans. When it’s time to unwind at the weekend, order one of these lower sugar alternatives to beer, and our favourite cocktails.

SIP YOUR WAY TO FITNESS WITH FITNESS-FRIENDLY ALCOHOLIC DRINKS

VODKA WITH SODA WATER AND LIME

Swap your vodka coke for a vodka with soda water and lime. The soda water gives the drink its sparkle, and the lime gives it a sweet flavour, without the sugar content of coke or lemonade.

CHAMPAGNE

If you enjoy wine, try going a little more high-end and opt for the champagne. A typical glass of champagne has just one gram of sugar. You will also look a hell of a lot classier sipping on your champagne with dinner.

VERMOUTH

In Spain, they drink vermouth neat with a little soda water. This way of drinking not only saves you from getting empty calories but also promotes weight loss. Vermouth is full of polyphenol compounds which have been linked to weight loss. Swap your Manhattan for a vermouth and soda, the European way.

WHISKY ON THE ROCKS

Another healthier option with a touch of class. Forgo the mixers and sip your whisky neat over a couple of ice cubes like a 1920s gentleman.

DRY MARTINI

There is a reason why no James Bond has ever had a gut. The spy’s drink of choice, the dry martini, has no carbs. It is a mixture of gin and vermouth and is often served with a small olive or lemon garnish. Go for shaken, not stirred.

SILVER TEQUILA

The brown tequila often has more carbs than the silver tequila. If tequila is your poison of choice, drink the silver variety without any mixer. It sounds like a hangover waiting to happen, but it isn’t going to give you a beer gut.

KEEP IN MIND

If you are restricting carbohydrate intake, it may take significantly less alcohol to get you drunk. Order these drinks with caution as you may not need much to feel the effects. One advantage of this is your fit and healthy lifestyle will save you money on the bar tab at the end of the night.

Enjoy these alcoholic drinks responsibly for a guilt-free evening of unwinding with friends. The gym will still be waiting for you the next day, and everyone deserves to let their hair down every once in a while.

Anthony Hill

When you put together the sum total of my 30 years of bodybuilding training, the contests, the vast array of diets I have experimented (tortured) myself with as well as the experiences I have been through with various training partners in the gyms I have trained in all over the world, it’s been a great ride and I wouldn’t change it for anything. Over the years, I have been fortunate enough to be able to do lots of personal training for private clients alongside my day job. For a few years during my 30’s, I moved to Asia and worked as the Fitness Manager and head personal trainer at one of Thailand’s leading gyms in Bangkok. Learn More
