WHY SKIPPING LEG DAY IS THE CARDINAL SIN

Why Skipping Leg Day Is the Cardinal Sin

The internet is littered with photos of guys with perfectly sculpted upper bodies, but skinny twig legs. Skipping leg day is the ultimate sin. We have all entertained the idea before. It’s been a long day at work, you are not in the mood to train, and to top it all off a gruelling leg session awaits. But this really is the worst thing you could do. Your leg workout is the most important workout of the week. Here is why.

LEG DAY IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOU ACTUALLY BELIEVE

WORKING YOUR LEGS BUILDS MUSCLE ALL OVER

Want bigger arms? Work your legs. Want a full chest and bowling ball shoulders? Also, work your legs. The big-ticket leg exercises like squats and deadlifts have been scientifically proven to increase testosterone production and growth hormone levels throughout the body. This means your leg workout also builds upper body muscle. Skipping leg day is short-changing the rest of your body.

LEG DAY BURNS MORE CALORIES

Your quads and glutes are two of the biggest muscles in your body. When you train these bigger muscles, it requires more energy and therefore burns more calories. Burning more calories in your workout will spike your metabolism for around 90 minutes afterwards. This means working legs has a significant impact on your bodies fat burning capabilities.

IT CAN LEAD TO INJURIES

Skipping leg day will cause a serious muscular imbalance. Not only does this look absolutely ridiculous (you only have to Google ‘skip leg day’ to see a whole host of twig-legged fools), but it can cause serious injuries. The stronger muscles do more to compensate for the weaker muscles, which overexerts the muscle and can cause a serious injury.

LEG DAY IS A VALUABLE MOTIVATION TOOL

Leg day is gruelling. There are no two ways about it. With two of the three biggest lifts of the week in deadlifts and squats, it is undoubtedly the hardest session of the week. Finishing a solid leg workout gives a motivation boost that can lift every workout of the week. Once the leg day is over, the rest of the week will be a walk in the park. Take that good feeling and use it to drive your other workouts.

Don’t commit the cardinal sin of weight training. Never skip leg day. Period. No ifs, no buts, no excuses. Skipping leg day robs your whole body of strength and size gains, It doesn’t maximise your body’s testosterone production, and ultimately, it could cause serious setbacks in the form of injury. Give this some thought before you neglect your legs next time.

When you put together the sum total of my 30 years of bodybuilding training, the contests, the vast array of diets I have experimented (tortured) myself with as well as the experiences I have been through with various training partners in the gyms I have trained in all over the world, it’s been a great ride and I wouldn’t change it for anything. Over the years, I have been fortunate enough to be able to do lots of personal training for private clients alongside my day job. For a few years during my 30’s, I moved to Asia and worked as the Fitness Manager and head personal trainer at one of Thailand’s leading gyms in Bangkok. Learn More
