Innovative Ways to Make Your Hair Appear Thicker

Like death and taxes, hair thinning is an inevitable part of later life for most men. For some men this means shaving it all off and resigning themselves to a life without hair, for others (like Donald Trump), it means frantically trying to cover your bald spots with what little hair remains.

But there are ways to make thinning hair appear thicker, giving you a more youthful appearance. Here is how to make the most of what you have got without resorting to Trump-esque sweep overs.

GO SHORTER ON THE SIDES

Going for a haircut which gives you short, cropped sides and a slightly longer top will maximise the volume of your hair. The juxtaposition of the short sides with the extra length on top creates an illusion of a thicker head of hair.

USE A HAIRDRYER TO STYLE YOUR HAIR

Often, people who have been using gels, waxes and product all their lives continue to do this into their 40s and 50s once their hair has thinned. The result is a hairstyle dripping with hair product, which can often make your hair look thinner.

Instead of using gels to create the style, use a hairdryer then apply a spray to get the desired hold. Hairdryers help provide much more volume and won’t leave you with a wet look that shows everyone your scalp.

WASH IT OFTEN

Having greasy hair is an easy way to make your hair look thinner. It becomes heavy and clumps together, falling flat against your scalp and losing all its volume. Wash your hair every two or three days with volume-boosting shampoo to keep the grease at bay and keep your hair looking fresh.

STOP COMBING YOUR HAIR

Put the comb down and use your fingers to untangle your hair and get the desired style. Combs leave hair looking lifeless and flat while using your fingers will preserve the hair’s natural volume and texture.

GROW A BEARD

The addition of some neatly trimmed facial hair draws attention away from the thinning top and provides balance for your face. It might not make your hair look thicker, but it will result in a more youthful appearance.

STOP SMOKING

Smoking cigarettes cause a spike in the hormones that cause hair loss. It also restricts the blood flow to the microscopic blood vessels in the scalp, leaving the hair follicles starved of nutrients. If you needed a reason to stop smoking, this is it.
