Health Hoax? Why Multivitamins Aren’t Always Necessary

Years of commercials and advertisements may have led you to believe that you simply can’t live a long and healthy life without multivitamins. However, this can’t be any further from the truth. Multivitamins aren’t always necessary, especially if you already have an active lifestyle and a healthy diet.

It’s not impossible to get your recommended daily allowance of vitamins and nutrients from food alone. To help you understand, here are three reasons why you can exclude multivitamins as a staple from your diet or routine if you are already leading a healthy lifestyle.

Some people think you can just wake up in the morning, pop a multivitamin in your mouth and go to work as normal. However, multivitamins or any supplements must never take the place of meals. They don’t work as alternatives or substitutes. Just because you take multivitamins regularly doesn’t mean you’re healthy.

There is also a common misconception that taking multivitamins cancels out all the junk you eat. If your dietary lifestyle involves nothing but fast food, chips and other unhealthy food items, then don’t be surprised if you feel terrible all the time. Multivitamins aren’t going to fix that.

You may not have time to eat a full breakfast in the morning. It’s always important to make an effort when it comes to the food you consume. Leading a fast-paced life can sometimes inhibit you from eating right.

However, you mustn’t let that get between you and a healthy lifestyle. Instead of that fast food place across the street, do some grocery shopping of your own and start cooking your own meals, too.

Despite the general belief that taking multivitamins makes you practically invincible to disease, there’s no conclusive proof of that. In fact, according to a study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, multivitamin supplements showed no decisive advantage for preventing a stroke, heart attack or cardiovascular disease.

It’s true that the body requires vitamins and minerals to function normally. However, you can easily get it from various food items. Thus, multivitamins aren’t always necessary, especially if you live healthily.

While the case against multivitamins is strong, you may still need them if you have a particular deficiency. However, you must check with your doctor first to make sure you are taking the right amount of vitamins.

What many people don’t know is that you can overdose on vitamins. It’s not something you can just keep taking in any quantity without repercussions. Taking too much vitamin A, for example, has been linked to a higher risk of lung cancer in smokers. Vitamin A is usually taken via beta-carotene supplements. However, it can be easily found in common vegetables like carrots, sweet potatoes and even kale.

An overdose of calcium can also lead to health hazards such as cardiovascular disease. Similarly, ingesting too much iron can cause fever, dehydration, nausea, bloody stools, diarrhoea, constipation, headache, dizziness and low blood pressure.

After reading all of this, it must become clear to you that multivitamins aren’t always necessary to live a healthy lifestyle. The truth is, all you need to do is exercise regularly, have a balanced diet and make sure to stick to it. Cut back on the unhealthy snacks and drinks and get your energy and nutrients from all-natural meat, fruits and vegetables. Before you know it, you’ll be saying goodbye to those expensive supplements.

When you put together the sum total of my 30 years of bodybuilding training, the contests, the vast array of diets I have experimented (tortured) myself with as well as the experiences I have been through with various training partners in the gyms I have trained in all over the world, it’s been a great ride and I wouldn’t change it for anything. Over the years, I have been fortunate enough to be able to do lots of personal training for private clients alongside my day job. For a few years during my 30’s, I moved to Asia and worked as the Fitness Manager and head personal trainer at one of Thailand’s leading gyms in Bangkok. Learn More
