THE IMPORTANCE OF PROTEIN SHAKES IN OUR EVERYDAY LIFE

The Importance of Protein Shakes in Our Everyday Life

Protein shakes are, in my opinion, probably the most important supplement there is. First off, for people who are not lactose intolerant, they’re completely safe with no known side effects. The reason they’re so important is that protein is the most important part of your diet.

Whether your goals are to increase muscle and get bigger and stronger, or lose weight and lose fat and get lean. Protein is the building block of muscle and without enough of it, your body won’t build muscle.

WHAT’S ALL THE FUSS ABOUT PROTEIN SHAKES?

CAN’T I JUST GET PROTEIN FROM FOODS?

The answer to that question is yes. But the problem is since we must eat a minimum of 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight, it gets very hard to eat so much regular food every day. Not many people have time to cook up chicken breasts all day long, which is where protein shakes come in handy. They take just a minute or two to prepare.

HOW MUCH AND HOW OFTEN?

Each regular scoop of powder has approximately 15 grams of protein, so depending on the size of the person or your particular goals, I think 2-3 scoops per shake is adequate. Mix this in a blender with water or skim milk, water makes it easier and quicker to digest and add some fruit for taste. The fruit also acts as a powerful antioxidant helping to clean the blood. If you eat 3 regular meals a day, 2 protein shakes added to this will be ideal.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO HAVE A PROTEIN SHAKE?

One of the best times is first thing in the morning. Your body hasn’t eaten for 8 hours or so while you’re sleeping, so a whey protein shake (whey is the fastest digesting protein there is) will be the perfect thing to give your body and a great way to kickstart your metabolism for the day.

The same goes for directly after your workout. This is probably the most important time to have a shake. Since you just worked out, your muscles need to rebuild and repair themselves and this is the most important time to give your body protein.

When you put together the sum total of my 30 years of bodybuilding training, the contests, the vast array of diets I have experimented (tortured) myself with as well as the experiences I have been through with various training partners in the gyms I have trained in all over the world, it’s been a great ride and I wouldn’t change it for anything. Over the years, I have been fortunate enough to be able to do lots of personal training for private clients alongside my day job. For a few years during my 30’s, I moved to Asia and worked as the Fitness Manager and head personal trainer at one of Thailand’s leading gyms in Bangkok. Learn More
