How to Style Your Hair Like a Barber

Whenever you step out of the barbers, your hair is on point, nicely styled and fresh. You feel younger and feel great. But the following morning, no matter how much time you spend in front of the mirror, you just can’t get the same look. It happens to all of us. Here are the stylists’ secrets and details of how you can style your hair like a pro barber every morning.

STAGE ONE

The first place to start is in the shower. You want to get rid of any remaining product from the day before – mind you, you should have done this the night before. This means using good shampoo and conditioner and preparing your hair for the later stages.

You can apply a gel before you dry your hair if it is short, or use a leave-in conditioner with longer hair. This will help you control your hair far better. Then you can add wax to finish the look.

STAGE TWO

Drying your hair with a hairdryer is an important stage of the styling process. By this point, you should have worked gel, serum or leave-in conditioner into the layers of your hair. Then direct the airflow to sculpt the shape of your hairstyle.

When you have the style you are looking for, switch the setting to cold, and blast your hair with cold air to loosen the hair and give a more natural look.

STAGE THREE

Now you more or less have the shape, it is time to add some product to put the finishing touches on the style. When it comes to product, less is more. You will notice your barber doesn’t slap handfuls of product on your hair. They use a small amount for a softer finish.

The bulk of the styling was done in stage two, so at this point, you shouldn’t be needing much anyway. Too many people compensate by dousing their hair with a lot of product because they skipped the preceding two stages. This will not give you the barbershop style and finish you are looking for.

STAGE FOUR

The final stage is designed to lock your style in place for the rest of the day. When you have your style exactly how you want it, give it a spray with some hairspray to hold it in place and ensure it looks great all day.

HAIR PRODUCT FOR HAIR TYPE

SHORT HAIR

For sleek, short hairstyles, use a pomade for the most texture and volume. For more shine and tighter control, use wax.

MEDIUM-LENGTH HAIR

For medium-length hair, a mud or fibre will give a messy, textured look. For a strong hold, you might want to use some gel. This will give a firm hold and comes in a variety of finishes to give a wet or dry look.

LONGER HAIR

Men with long hair who want something to control the frizz might want to use a cream to create the perfect style. With longer hair, it becomes even more important to finish the look off with hairspray to keep the curls at bay. Deep oil or leave-in conditioning treatments can also greatly help to reduce frizz.

You only get one chance to make a good first impression. Make sure your hair is on point every day of the week. These steps allow you to create that freshly-groomed, barber-shop look from your own bathroom before you step out.
