REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD USE A SMITH MACHINE

Reasons Why You Should Use a Smith Machine

The old school dude in your gym probably sees the smith machine as a “girls tool” for tightening her thighs. It should also be noted that the same guy who thinks that is also eating three blue-rare steaks and 12 scrambled eggs each day. The truth is, there are many benefits if you use a Smith machine.

The Smith machine isn’t some tightening and toning apparatus. Nor is it the “training wheels” of gym lifting. It’s an amazing machine the can help build strength and power while sparing your joints of unnecessary stress and help prevent injury. Just about every muscle group in your body can be directly and indirectly trained on the Smith machine.

THE BENEFITS YOU’LL GET WHEN YOU USE A SMITH MACHINE

MORE STABLE RANGE OF MOTION

The Smith machine allows you to perform each exercise in a controlled range of motion. For example, it would be impossible to lose your balance doing Smith squats because the bar is in a fixed position as it slides up and down the tracks. This means you can perform the exercise without risk of falling. Always ensure your form is flawless, even while using a Smith machine.

PLENTY OF EXERCISE OPTIONS

Unlike other machines designed to work one specific exercise, the Smith machine is very versatile and can be used to train many different body parts through various exercises. This includes upper and lower body.

GREAT FOR ADVANCED AND BEGINNER LIFTERS

Whether you’re just starting up or have years of training under your lifting belt, the Smith machine is a great addition to your workouts. It promotes strength gains with minimal impact on your joints. It’s always a great idea to incorporate a few exercises with the Smith machine into your routine.

ABILITY TO INCREASE LOAD SAFELY

The Smith machine acts as your own spotter. You can add more weight than usual (within reason) and lock the weight up when you’re unable to finish another rep. This is a great tool to have if you are training alone or in a home gym.

INCREASED MUSCLE TARGETING

Since there is no lateral movement when using a Smith machine you completely avoid unwanted muscle groups from activating and taking away from the body part you’re intending to train. The Smith machine is an excellent tool for direct muscle targeting and isolation, as well as for compound movements.

Summing up, use a Smith machine instead of free weights to learn proper form without risking an injury. It’s simply one of the best ways to get good practice, especially if you’re a beginner.

When you put together the sum total of my 30 years of bodybuilding training, the contests, the vast array of diets I have experimented (tortured) myself with as well as the experiences I have been through with various training partners in the gyms I have trained in all over the world, it’s been a great ride and I wouldn’t change it for anything. Over the years, I have been fortunate enough to be able to do lots of personal training for private clients alongside my day job. For a few years during my 30’s, I moved to Asia and worked as the Fitness Manager and head personal trainer at one of Thailand’s leading gyms in Bangkok. Learn More
